New Latvian rock music group M.E.K.A. has officially introduced itself to the music scene, releasing their debut single “Ziemeļu pusē” alongside an accompanying music video on September 25, 2025. Comprising four professional musicians—vocalist Atis Zviedris, guitarist Kristens Kupčs, bassist Edžus Korsaks, and drummer Mārcis Briška—the group fuses 1990s grunge energy with heavy modern guitar work, technical precision, and powerful vocals.
Origins of M.E.K.A. and the Debut Single
The band’s name is an acronym derived from the first letters of its four members’ given names. The project took shape in 2025 when vocalist Atis Zviedris reached out to the other musicians, discovering a strong creative chemistry during their first creative attempts, according to reports from TVNET and Music World.
The foundation for “Ziemeļu pusē” dates back eight years, when Zviedris recorded an initial acoustic guitar sketch of the chorus and a brief verse in his home studio. The idea sat dormant for years until he assembled the current lineup.
“When I met my M.E.K.A. colleagues, we realized this song had potential,” Zviedris said, as reported by Music World. “I wrote the rest of the lyrics and the song skeleton, which the band members worked on further, creating the massive rock sound you hear now.”
The Meaning Behind “North Side”
The single explores the emotional aftermath of repeated disappointments and pain, chronicling a deliberate choice of self-preservation. Rather than indicating clinical depression, the lyrics describe a protective psychological state.
“At the time of writing the song, I placed myself in a frozen bubble that has no access from the outside world,” Zviedris explained to TVNET. “It is a story about a soul that has burned itself countless times and refuses to experience anything similar again, ending up in a frozen state of aggregation. It is not depression, but a defense mechanism that prevents one from getting burned again.”
The ensemble translates this internal tension into a heavy, energetic rock composition built around dynamic instrumentation. According to the group’s statements, their repertoire focuses heavily on human relationships, love, society, and modern life.
Music Video Production at Atmodas Elings
Simultaneously with the single’s release, M.E.K.A. premiered the official music video for “Ziemeļu pusē.” Filmed at the “Atmodas Elings” cultural space in the port of Engure, the visual production features direction by Mārtiņš Māters and cinematography by Artūrs Vanags through Armless Birds.
Styling, makeup, and hair were managed by Alise Zvejsalniece, while Baiba Ripa contributed as costume designer. The single and its accompanying video became available across major streaming platforms and video services starting September 25.
