Nordic Mining CEO Finn Ivar Marum Resigns and Otto Søberg Takes Over

Nordic Mining CEO Finn Ivar Marum resigned abruptly on Wednesday, stepping down on the same day to accept a leadership role outside the mining sector. The departure comes as the Oslo Børs-listed company faces severe financial distress, a stock price down over 90 percent for the year, and an imminent liquidity crunch.

Leadership Transition at Engebø

Finn Ivar Marum informed the board of his resignation on Wednesday, according to a corporate announcement reported by E24 and confirmed by board chairman Kjell Roland. Marum will remain available as an adviser to the board and managing director through the end of the year, focusing specifically on regulatory permits and government relations.

The board appointed Otto Søberg as interim chief executive officer. Søberg brings extensive executive background to the role, having previously served as top executive at Kværner Energy and Kværner Oil & Gas. Chairman Kjell Roland stated that Søberg’s leadership experience will secure continuity and operational momentum for the ongoing ramp-up at the Engebø project in Naustdal municipality.

“Finn Ivar has led Nordic Mining through a demanding phase and built a robust team with the expertise needed for the further ramp-up at Engebø,” Roland noted in comments provided to E24, praising Marum for building a solid operational team through a challenging development phase.

Financial Pressures and Restructuring Plans

The executive shakeup arrives during a critical period for Nordic Mining, which holds a market capitalization of 111 million Norwegian kroner. The company’s stock has plunged more than 90 percent on the Oslo Stock Exchange this year, driven by production delays at the Engebø rutile and garnet mine and severe capital shortages.

Company officials previously warned that existing financing reserves would only sustain operations through mid-October. Management has struggled to ramp up production at the Vestland county facility to expected commercial levels.

New Tailings Disposal Permitting

Hours prior to the CEO’s resignation announcement, the Ministry of Climate and Environment granted Nordic Mining a three-year temporary discharge permit to deposit mining waste into Førdefjorden. Subsidiaries Engebø Rutil and Garnet received authorization to dump 4.5 million tonnes of tailings over the next three years.

The government decision follows a lengthy legal battle in which the Norwegian Supreme Court invalidated the company’s original discharge permits. The new temporary authorization aims to remove regulatory uncertainty, though the government continues to evaluate broader, longer-term permits for the operation. Marum stated prior to his departure that the decision provides the stability necessary to continue production and protect local jobs.
