An Israeli plumber on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv helped passengers and crew subdue a co-pilot who attacked the captain and sent the jetliner plummeting more than 17,000 feet, according to statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Agence France-Presse reports. The September 2026 incident aboard the flydubai aircraft carrying 174 passengers ended with an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

Mid-Air Cockpit Struggle and Emergency Descent

The flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned critical when a physical altercation broke out in the cockpit between the pilot, identified as Indian national Smit Machchhar, and his co-pilot. Flightradar24 data shows the aircraft abruptly dropped over 17,000 feet in the span of a single minute during the struggle. Netanyahu told Fox News broadcaster Sean Hannity that the co-pilot stabbed the captain, leaving Mr. Machchhar covered in blood on the floor before the pilot managed to click the release mechanism to open the cockpit door.

According to Netanyahu, an Israeli passenger and plumber named Yaniv entered the cockpit during the chaos, grabbed the attacker from behind, pulled him back, and took the pilot’s seat to pull the control stick back. Additional passengers rushed in to help subdue the co-pilot. A second pair of flydubai pilots who were onboard ultimately landed the jet safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Netanyahu called the intervention an “amazing act of heroism” that stopped a potential global disaster. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also issued a statement on social media praising Captain Machchhar for displaying immense courage and unwavering resolve despite serious injuries.

Israeli officials stated that the motive behind the cockpit attack remains unclear. Authorities are investigating whether the incident had any connection to Iran or another external actor.
