Pep Guardiola defends Manchester City after financial rule breaches

Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola stated his full backing for the club and its leadership in an emotional social media post on September 30, 2026. His remarks followed an independent commission’s ruling that found Manchester City guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018, exposing the club to potential sanctions that include stripping of titles or relegation.

Guardiola, who managed the club from 2016 until this year, addressed supporters worldwide via a statement on Instagram. During his tenure, the Spanish coach secured 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League crown.

“I want every single Manchester City fan on the world to know I am here; more than ever,” Guardiola wrote. “I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players, staff, Enzo and you, our unique supporters.”

Within his message, Guardiola specifically named chief executive Ferran Soriano and his successor on the bench, Enzo Maresca. He concluded the statement with a direct reassurance regarding the club’s current predicament: “Let me be clear: we will get through this together.”

Independent Commission Findings and Pending Sanctions

The public show of support arrived one day after the Premier League confirmed that an independent commission upheld more than 100 charges against Manchester City. The breaches occurred from 2009 to 2018. The commission also found the club guilty of failing to cooperate and obstructing the league's investigation.

Manchester City has denied all allegations of financial wrongdoing. Following the release of the commission’s conclusions, the club intends to appeal the verdict. The Premier League and the independent commission have yet to officially determine the specific penalties the club will face.
