Flight FZ1073 Plunges 14,000 Feet After Cockpit Stabbing Prompts Saudi Diversion
FlyDubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds on Wednesday after a violent altercation broke out in the cockpit.
All passengers survived the emergency landing, though both pilots sustained injuries and required hospitalization. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the event as an attempted terror attack, while FlyDubai cautioned against premature speculation regarding the underlying causes.
Cockpit Stabbing And Rapid Descent Unfold Over Saudi Airspace
The flight departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion Airport and was cruising at around 34,000 feet over Saudi Arabia when the attack began at approximately 05:21 UTC. Flightradar24 data showed the aircraft dropping from 30,875 feet to 16,750 feet in just 29 seconds, with its descent rate reaching nearly 31,000 feet per minute as ground speed accelerated from 400 knots to nearly 600 knots.

Israeli officials stated that the co-pilot, identified by Netanyahu as an Omani national detained in Saudi Arabia, attacked Captain Smit Machchhar. Despite bleeding profusely from severe injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. Passenger Yaniv Hayoun, an Israeli plumber with no piloting background, stepped forward to help grab the controls and level the aircraft after watching the television show Air Crash Investigation. Off-duty FlyDubai crew members then took command of the flight and completed the diversion to Tabuk.
Boeing 737 MAX Structure Withstands Extreme G-Forces
President Donald Trump praised Boeing and its 737 MAX aircraft on Truth Social, commending the manufacturer for producing a jet that survived structural forces far beyond its design expectations. Trump congratulated CEO Kelly Ortberg and company associates, highlighting the aircraft’s precise structural planning after it endured an exceptionally steep descent and sustained rudder damage.

Aviation experts noted that federal certification rules require design dive speeds and structural margins to withstand buffer limits beyond normal operating envelopes, and some experts said they were surprised the forces did not cause the aircraft’s entire vertical stabilizer to rip away during the 14,000-foot plunge. Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi both praised Captain Machchhar, an Indian national, for his resilience. Machchhar was hospitalized in stable condition, and passengers later boarded a replacement FlyDubai repatriation flight back to Ben Gurion Airport in Israel.
Investigation And Flight Suspensions Follow Emergency Landing
FlyDubai suspended all flights to and from Israel while aviation authorities in the United Arab Emirates investigate the cockpit security breach. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz joined Netanyahu in labeling the event a terrorist attempt, though investigators have not yet publicly established a definitive motive.
The UAE aviation investigation authority continues to examine the incident.
