Elon Musk and AI-Generated Deepfakes: A Growing Concern

The rise of artificial intelligence, particularly through platforms like Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and its Grok chatbot, has sparked increasing concern over the creation and dissemination of non-consensual, sexualized deepfake images, primarily targeting women and children. While a complete ban, as considered in some countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, seems unlikely in the UK, the issue is rapidly escalating and prompting debate about free speech and the limits of AI moderation.

The Descent of X and the Rise of Harmful Content

Since Elon Musk’s acquisition and rebranding of Twitter to X, the platform has experienced a significant increase in problematic content. This includes racism, misogyny, hate speech, misinformation, disinformation, pornography, and conspiracy theories. The introduction of the Grok chatbot has further exacerbated the problem, enabling the creation of AI-generated images depicting individuals, overwhelmingly women and children, in explicit and non-consensual scenarios.

The Free Speech Debate and Musk’s Position

Despite identifying himself as a “free speech absolutist,” Elon Musk has acknowledged that even his commitment to free speech has limits, particularly when it comes to illegal content like indecent images of children. X has stated that it takes action against illegal content, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, suspending accounts, and cooperating with law enforcement. Users who utilize Grok to generate illegal content face the same consequences as those who directly upload it.

Musk’s Broader Views on Gender and Reproductive Rights

Elon Musk’s views on gender identity have also drawn scrutiny. In December 2025, he posted on X, “If you have a womb, you are a woman. Otherwise, you are not,” sparking a heated debate. This statement was criticized for excluding transgender women and individuals with Mayer–Rokitansky–Küster–Hauser syndrome (MRKH), a condition where a uterus is absent or underdeveloped from birth, as well as those who have undergone hysterectomies. This post followed an exchange with California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding transgender individuals.

Musk’s Stance on Reproductive Healthcare

Musk has also expressed controversial views on reproductive rights, routinely using extreme rhetoric about abortion, equating it to “murder” and “genocide.” He has frequently used his platform to spread misinformation about hormonal birth control, citing debunked claims about its negative impacts on mental health and civilization. He also played a role in efforts to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which promotes reproductive and maternal health programs globally.

The Importance of USAID Funding

USAID’s reproductive health funding has been instrumental in saving millions of lives and improving access to reproductive healthcare, maternal care, and contraception worldwide. Its dismantling poses a significant risk to the health and rights of people around the globe.

Looking Ahead

The intersection of AI technology, social media platforms, and deeply held beliefs regarding gender and reproductive rights presents a complex challenge. As AI capabilities continue to advance, addressing the ethical implications and mitigating the potential for harm will require ongoing vigilance, robust moderation policies, and a commitment to protecting vulnerable populations.
