A483 Shropshire Road Closures: Overnight Disruptions for Drivers
Drivers traveling between England and Wales are facing overnight closures on the A483 in Shropshire for essential maintenance work. The closures, impacting a key route for commuters and freight, will be in effect daily between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM GMT from Monday, February 23rd to Friday, March 20th, 2026.
Roadwork Details and Location
The affected stretch of the A483 runs between Llynclys and Llanymynech, on the border of Shropshire, England, and Wales. National Highways is undertaking this work to lay a new “high-friction” road surface, repaint road markings, and conduct drainage surveys .
Significant Diversion Route
Motorists will face a substantial diversion of approximately 43 miles during the closure period. The diversion route includes Preston Montford (Shrewsbury), Buttington (Welshpool), Four Crosses, and Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, adding over an hour to typical journey times .
Purpose of the Work
According to Joseph Walmsley of National Highways, the new road surface is designed to improve safety, providing drivers with a greater margin for stopping if another vehicle unexpectedly enters their path . The work is described as “essential maintenance” of the A483 and at Llynclys Crossroads.
Access for Emergency Services
National Highways has confirmed that access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times during the closures. Access to The White Lion and The Garden Lodge will too be preserved .
Additional Road Closures in Shropshire
Drivers in Shropshire should also be aware of other planned road closures. As of January 2, 2026, closures are scheduled for the A5 and A49 for various maintenance works . These include ongoing work on the A5 Gledrid roundabout to the Welsh Border, expected to continue until March 1, 2026, and maintenance on the A49 between Onibury and Wootton, lasting until March 31, 2026.
