Åberg Maintains Lead at The Players Championship After Third Round
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Ludvig Åberg holds a three-stroke lead heading into the final round of The Players Championship, despite a one-under 71 in Saturday’s third round at TPC Sawgrass. Cam Young and Matt Fitzpatrick experienced challenging finishes, impacting their position on the leaderboard.
Åberg’s Third Round Performance
Åberg began the day with a two-shot advantage following a stunning second-round 63, which included a front-nine score matching the tournament record. Whereas he stumbled early with a bogey on the fourth hole after a difficult recovery from the rough, he regained momentum with a birdie on the ninth. A subsequent eagle at the 11th extended his lead to four strokes. He finished with a bogey on the 18th, settling at 13 under overall.
Contenders and Challenges
Michael Thorbjornsen trails Åberg by three strokes at 10 under. Young held solo second place until a double bogey on the 18th hole dropped him to nine under. Fitzpatrick as well faltered, finishing his round with a six to fall into a tie for fourth place alongside Xander Schauffele, Brian Harman, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas and Corey Conners.
Scheffler and McIlroy’s Rounds
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler rebounded from a difficult start to the tournament, carding a bogey-free 67 to move to four under. Defending champion Rory McIlroy struggled, posting a level-par 72 and finishing at one over.
Key Moments and Turning Points
Åberg’s early struggles were offset by a strong performance on the par-five holes. Thorbjornsen briefly closed within one stroke, but Åberg’s birdie at the ninth re-established his lead. Young’s double bogey on the 17th, after finding the water off the tee, proved costly.
Åberg’s Perspective
“Made a couple of mistakes early, hung in well, it was nice to get off with a birdie on nine,” Åberg told Sky Sports. “Didn’t sense like I had my best stuff today, but overall pleased with getting away with it and getting the ball in the hole.” He emphasized the importance of execution at Sawgrass, stating, “Sawgrass is about execution. If you hit the fairways and hit your shots you’ll get a lot of chances, if you don’t you’ll get punished and that’s the kind of golf I really like. I love these big feel tournaments. Tomorrow will be a challenge but looking forward to it.”
Looking Ahead
Åberg aims to secure his third PGA Tour title and become the first golfer since Rory McIlroy in 2019 to convert a 36-hole lead into a victory at The Players Championship.
