Adam Commens has announced he will step down as coach of Belgium’s women’s national field hockey team, the Red Panthers. Commens will officially relinquish his coaching duties to refocus entirely on his role as the technical director of Belgian national hockey teams, a position he has held since September 2016.
Transition and Leadership Strategy for the Red Panthers
Taking over the coaching reins was not an initial ambition for Commens, who admitted that stepping into the role carried distinct professional risks. According to interviews reported by RTBF, Commens stated that he initially resisted taking the coaching position, preferring to avoid a complete change to preserve team stability ahead of the World Cup. “I didn’t want to be the first option. Ultimately, I accepted. This choice was not without risk,” Commens explained to RTBF, noting that the squad required minor adjustments and leadership clarity rather than an entire overhaul.
Commens arrived in Belgium in 2004 following a playing career with the Australian national team, the Kookaburras, where he captured a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. After playing for the Antwerp club and winning the Belgian league title in 2007 as both a player and women’s coach, he transitioned into broader national program leadership. As technical director, he works alongside federation CEO Serge Pilet to oversee development across all age brackets, from under-15s to the senior squads.
Future Outlook for Belgian National Teams
Having previously coached the men’s national team, the Red Lions, to success—including ending a 32-year Olympic absence—he now aims to elevate the Red Panthers to world podium contenders. According to RTBF, Commens acquired Belgian citizenship in November, deepening his long-term roots in Antwerp where he resides with his wife and three children.
Looking toward upcoming international milestones, including the 2026 World Cup, Commens will transition back to his exclusive technical director duties to appoint a long-term successor for the Red Panthers. His overarching objective remains securing simultaneous podium finishes for both the Red Lions and the Red Panthers at major global competitions.
