Adria Arjona Joins the DCU as Maxima in ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’
The expanding DC Universe (DCU) just added a powerhouse performer to its roster. Adria Arjona, best known for her role as Bix Caleen in Star Wars: Andor, has officially been cast as Maxima in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. Directed, produced, and written by James Gunn, the film is set to further build the world around David Corenswet’s Man of Steel.
Who is Maxima?
For those unfamiliar with the comics, Maxima is a warrior queen from the planet Almerac. First introduced in Action Comics #645 in 1990 by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez, she is an alien conqueror with formidable superpowers. Her primary motivation upon arriving on Earth is the search for a suitable mate, and she quickly sets her sights on Superman.

Throughout DC’s comic history, Maxima’s role has shifted, serving as an antagonist, an ally, and a potential love interest. While she has appeared in live-action television series like Smallville and Supergirl, Man of Tomorrow marks her first appearance in a live-action DC feature film.
The Casting Process and Arjona’s Path to the DCU
Arjona’s casting follows a competitive round of auditions. According to Variety, she tested for the role alongside finalists including Grace Van Patten, Sydney Chandler, and Eva De Dominici. Other reports indicated she was previously rumored to be up against Marisa Abela and Ella Purnell.
Interestingly, Arjona was a fan-favorite for the role of Wonder Woman, and James Gunn has noted that she would have been “great” in that part. Yet, the role of Maxima proved to be the perfect fit. Gunn and Arjona share a long-standing professional relationship, having known each other since she was cast in The Belko Experiment a decade ago.
‘Man of Tomorrow’ Ensemble and Plot Details
The sequel will witness David Corenswet return as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. In a surprising twist, these legendary adversaries are forced to team up to combat a massive threat: the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac, played by German actor Lars Eidinger.
