“We are the ghosts of the national education system”: AESH demand recognition and status in Cherbourg

Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (50). They are present in all schools, essential to the inclusion of pupils with disabilities, yet remain largely invisible. The Accompagnants des Élèves en Situation de handicap (AESH – Support Staff for Pupils with Disabilities) demonstrated in Cherbourg on Tuesday, November 28th, to demand recognition and a specific status.

“We are the ghosts of the national education system,” laments Sophie, an AESH for five years. “We are essential, yet we are not recognized as such.” This feeling is shared by the fifty AESH present, who marched through the town center before gathering in front of the prefecture.

Their demands are simple: a reclassification within the civil service, a salary increase, and improved working conditions. Currently, AESH are employed by local authorities and their pay varies considerably depending on the department. Their contracts are often precarious, with hours fluctuating and no guarantee of employment during school holidays.

“We are asked to perform increasingly complex tasks, requiring specific skills,” explains Isabelle, another AESH. “We are not just there to supervise, we are involved in the educational process, working closely with teachers and therapists.”

The AESH are calling for a national status that would guarantee them the same rights and benefits as other education staff. They believe this is crucial not only for their own well-being but also for the quality of support they can provide to pupils with disabilities.

The demonstration comes as the government is due to present a new bill on disability. The AESH hope their voices will be heard and that their demands will be taken into account. They are determined to continue their fight for recognition and a secure future.
