The inclusion of the cosmic entities brings one of the most esoteric concepts from animated Star Wars storytelling directly into live-action television. Speaking to Empire magazine, Dave Filoni confirmed that the powerful beings are a definite theme for the new episodes. In the season 1 finale, the mysterious figures appeared only as massive statues on the distant planet Peridea, with Baylan Skoll standing atop one of the monuments in the final scenes.
Filoni told Empire that approaching the entities involves examining how characters deal with belief and consequence rather than relying solely on visual spectacle. “Worum es geht, ist: Wirst du daran glauben oder nicht? Und was ist die Gefahr, wenn es echt ist? Wie setzt du deine Ziele dann?”, Filoni explained to the magazine regarding the existential stakes for the protagonists. He noted that the narrative will question what a Jedi versus an ordinary person would do when faced with such phenomena.
Origins of the Mortis Trinity in Star Wars History
Created by George Lucas during the third season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Father, the Son, and the Daughter form a trinity representing the Force itself. During a three-episode arc set on the planet Mortis, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano encountered the trio. In that storyline, the Son represented the dark side, the Daughter embodied the light, and the Father maintained the balance between them.
Ahsoka shares a direct personal history with these entities, having met them during the animated arc where the Daughter brought her back to life after she was killed by the Son. Because the titular hero experienced those events firsthand, Filoni’s storyline treats the reality of the gods as a lingering question she cannot simply ignore. However, Filoni assured Empire that viewers who have not watched the animated series do not need to catch up on back-catalog episodes, as the live-action series is designed to function independently.

Production for the second season shifted from Los Angeles to the Pinewood Studios near London, marking a major operational change for the franchise. Eman Esfandi, who portrays Ezra Bridger, revealed on the The Moviegoers Society podcast that the new episodes feature a noticeably harsher and much more intense tone. Esfandi noted that the production marked his largest project to date, requiring him to live abroad for seven months of filming.
The extended gap between seasons was exacerbated by the 2023 entertainment industry strikes, which left the cast uncertain about the show’s future during the work stoppages. Esfandi also highlighted the intense physical demands on the cast, pointing out that lead actor Rosario Dawson spent three to four hours in the makeup chair before embarking on daily ten- to twelve-hour shooting schedules.

Beyond the mystical implications of Mortis, season 2 must resolve Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return to the primary galaxy alongside Ezra Bridger, where Thrawn is actively gathering military assets against the New Republic.
