AIA's Plub Laotamatas Says AI Frees Time for Customer Trust

AIA Group is integrating artificial intelligence into its operations to deepen relationships between insurance agents and customers, according to Plub Laotamatas, the company’s head of customer and digital marketing. Laotamatas detailed the firm’s strategy during the 19th International Insurance Industry Symposium held on November 5 in Seoul, Financial News reported.

While some industries fear that automation could erode the connection between businesses and their clients, AIA is pursuing a contrary approach. Laotamatas stated that in an industry where the expertise of insurance planners remains critical, AI functions as a tool to assist agents in understanding client needs more comprehensively and in a more timely manner.

Personalizing Insurance Through AI

The integration of AI allows AIA to offer a level of personalization similar to the services consumers encounter on platforms like Amazon, Netflix, or Spotify. Laotamatas noted that by streamlining tasks such as underwriting and claim processing, AI provides insurance professionals with more time to focus on meaningful communication with their clients.

The firm’s strategy centers on the belief that the winners in the AI era will not necessarily be the insurers with the most advanced technology, but those that utilize AI to foster trust and strengthen the connection between the company, the agent, and the customer.

Prioritizing Human-Centric Service

Despite the rapid adoption of digital tools, Laotamatas emphasized that the insurance business must remain human-centric. He outlined two primary challenges for insurers: they must implement AI in a way that provides clear choices, while ensuring that the technology remains supportive rather than cold.

“Customers purchase insurance because they seek peace of mind and the comfort of having someone there for them when life becomes complicated or difficult,” Laotamatas said. “This is an unchanging fact.”

Aia Uses Artificial Intelligence to Reduce Administrative Burdens

How does AIA use AI to change the role of insurance agents?
AIA uses AI to handle administrative burdens like claim processing and underwriting. By reducing the time spent on these tasks, the company aims to give agents more capacity to engage in direct, high-value communication with their clients.

What is the core philosophy behind AIA’s digital strategy?
The company’s approach is to use AI as a bridge rather than a barrier. According to Plub Laotamatas, the technology is intended to deepen the relationship between the client and the insurance advisor, rather than replacing the human element of the service.

Where did these details regarding AIA’s AI strategy originate?
These insights were shared by Plub Laotamatas during the 19th International Insurance Industry Symposium, which took place on November 5 at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, and was co-hosted by Financial News and the Korea Insurance Research Institute.
