An air traffic controller prevented a potential mid-air collision over the United States after a scheduling delay placed two Boeing 737-800 aircraft with identical call signs into the same airspace simultaneously, according to reports verified by regional media outlets including ABC 15 and KOAA News 5.
Identical Call Signs and a Scheduling Delay
The near-miss incident stemmed from a scheduling overlap on a domestic route operated by American Airlines. The carrier runs flights in both directions between Chicago, Illinois, and Phoenix, Arizona, using the identical call sign AA2482, as reported by ntv.de. On a Thursday evening, the flight departing Chicago for Phoenix suffered a significant delay. Meanwhile, the corresponding flight traveling from Phoenix to Chicago departed on schedule.
Because of the schedule shift, both Boeing 737-800 aircraft converged in the same sector of airspace at the same time.
Air Traffic Controller Intervention Prevents Disaster
An anonymous air traffic controller with 25 years of experience in the profession intervened to guide the two aircraft past each other safely. According to statements quoted by ABC 15 and KOAA News 5, the controller noted the uniqueness of the event, stating that they had never witnessed two aircraft with the same call sign positioned so closely together over a quarter-century career.
To mitigate the collision risk, the controller established distinct verbal designations for the pilots.
Data cited by KOAA News 5 confirmed that the two aircraft maintained a horizontal separation of approximately three miles, equivalent to roughly 4.8 kilometers, alongside a vertical gap of about 2,000 feet, which translates to nearly 610 meters. Formal regulatory guidelines established by aviation authorities were observed, as the measured distance satisfied minimum statutory separation requirements.
