According to reporting from German broadcaster n-tv, which cited local station coverage and dpa, the airline routinely operates flights under the call sign AA2482 in both directions between Chicago, Illinois, and Phoenix, Arizona. On a Thursday evening, the aircraft scheduled to fly from Chicago to Phoenix departed with a substantial delay. Meanwhile, the second Boeing 737-800 operating under the same designation departed on time from Phoenix bound for Chicago.
Because of the schedule disruption, both planes occupied the same sector of airspace simultaneously. Data cited by KOAA News 5 indicates that the two commercial airliners maintained a horizontal separation of approximately three miles, or about 4.8 kilometers, alongside a vertical separation of roughly 2,000 feet, which translates to nearly 610 meters. While these metrics formally complied with standard federal separation mandates, the shared call sign created an acute risk of operational confusion.
