DFW Airport Enhances Firefighting Capabilities with Hybrid Electric Apparatus
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is at the forefront of aviation safety innovation, having deployed its first hybrid Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) apparatus. This move positions DFW among the first airports in the nation to adopt this leading-edge technology, bolstering its emergency response capabilities and commitment to sustainability.
Advanced Technology for Faster Response Times
The fresh vehicle, a Striker Volterra, is a six-wheeled, specialized unit designed exclusively for aircraft firefighting. It boasts a hybrid drive system that allows it to accelerate from 0 to 50 mph in under 21 seconds – a 40% improvement compared to traditional diesel-powered ARFF vehicles. DFW Airport Newsroom
Benefits of the Hybrid System
Beyond speed, the Striker Volterra offers significant operational and environmental advantages:
- Reduced Emissions: In electric mode, the vehicle produces zero emissions, minimizing the environmental impact.
- Lower Fuel Consumption: The hybrid system significantly reduces fuel usage.
- Reduced Noise: Quieter operation improves the working environment for firefighters.
- Firefighter Safety: Reduced exhaust fumes enhance firefighter safety during station entry, and standby.
Commitment to Safety and Sustainability
“Enhancing performance by reducing response times is the key driver of transitioning to these new vehicles,” said Daniel White, Chief of DFW Fire-Rescue. “The Striker Volterra vehicles are faster and more agile than our current fleet. Due to the fact that they are also safer for our firefighters and better for the environment, this investment represents a rare win-win-win, delivering operational benefits while ensuring the safety of our responders and the community we serve.” DFW Airport Newsroom
Transition to Fluorine-Free Foam
DFW’s investment in hybrid ARFF technology also supports the airport’s transition to fluorine-free firefighting foam, aligning with industry efforts to eliminate PFAS chemicals. This demonstrates a comprehensive approach to safety and environmental responsibility.
Expanding the Hybrid Fleet
DFW is significantly expanding its hybrid ARFF fleet, with five additional Striker Volterra vehicles scheduled to arrive by late summer. This will craft DFW the largest customer of the Volterra apparatus nationwide. DFW Airport Newsroom
The addition of these advanced vehicles underscores DFW’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its firefighting infrastructure with higher-performing, cleaner, and safer operations.
