Alaska Airlines to Establish Pilot Base in San Diego, Strengthening West Coast Presence

San Diego, CA – Alaska Airlines is strategically expanding its operations with the declaration of a new pilot base at San Diego International Airport, slated to become operational in June 2026. This move signifies a significant investment in the San Diego market and underscores the airline’s commitment to growth along the West Coast, positioning it for increased competition with Southwest Airlines.

The new base will initially accommodate up to 250 captains and first officers, with the airline planning to hire 90 new first officers in the first quarter of 2026. While the expansion will bolster overall network growth, some staffing adjustments are anticipated at Alaska’s existing bases in Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Anchorage, Alaska, san Francisco, and Los Angeles. the airline clarified that any pilot reductions in San Francisco and Los Angeles will see crew members relocating within California to the san Diego base.

“San Diego is the fastest-growing hub in Alaska Airlines’ network, with 80% capacity growth between 2023 and the schedule we will fly next year, including 14 new routes,” stated Neil Thwaites, regional Vice President of California at Alaska Airlines. “Establishing a pilot base here helps us improve operational reliability and support future growth in the region. We are committed to long-term growth in San Diego, and the pilot base will help enable that.”

Impact on Operations and Connectivity

Industry analysts view the establishment of the San Diego pilot base as a pivotal step for Alaska Airlines. Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, emphasized the operational benefits. “What this indicates to me is that Alaska is planning a really substantial growth spurt in San Diego,” Harteveldt explained. “By having a San Diego base, it will be easier for the airline to staff flights that start or end in San Diego, rather than having to create routings for pilots to come from some other base.”
