Alexander Zverev Slams “Nonsense” Masters Format and Djokovic Bonuses

Alexander Zverev criticized the expanded two-week ATP Masters 1000 tournament format as unnecessary, pointing to high-profile player withdrawals like Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner ahead of the US Open. According to a press conference reported by Swiss news outlet 20 Minuten ahead of the Canadian Open in Montreal, the world number two argued that the stretched schedules demand too much physical and mental stamina from competitors.

Zverev Criticizes Twelve-Day Schedule as Unsure Fix for Player Fatigue

Since the ATP Tour expanded several Masters events to 12- and 13-day draws starting in 2023, tournament organizers have wrestled with player burnout. Zverev stated that lengthening the events fails to address the root problem of a grueling tennis calendar. According to 20 Minuten, the German player remarked during his pre-tournament media session that forcing athletes to spend nearly three weeks on the road during Grand Slam blocks, coupled with extended Masters events, makes full participation unreasonable. «Tut mir leid, das ist Unsinn,» Zverev said, translating to «Sorry, that is nonsense.»

The scheduling pressure directly influenced player entries for the hard-court summer swing. Zverev admitted he also considered skipping the tournament before deciding he needed match practice.

Why Financial Bonuses Fail to Lure Top-Ranked Stars

To combat top-tier absences, tournament organizers and the ATP have previously discussed financial incentives, including end-of-year bonus pools tied to mandatory Masters participation. Zverev dismissed those measures as ineffective for elite players who have already accumulated substantial career earnings. According to 20 Minuten, Zverev noted of Djokovic: «I guess the guy has—if I had to guess—well over 400 million in his bank account. I’m not sure if 50,000 more or less would make a difference to him.»

Zverev emphasized that financial bonuses pale in comparison to the need for physical recovery. While the ATP offers financial rewards for players who commit to all nine Masters 1000 tournaments, athletes at the top of the sport prioritize longevity and peak condition for major championships over bonus payouts.

Zverev maintained that returning Masters events to a traditional one-week format remains the only viable solution to attract full fields and safeguard player health moving forward.
