Alexandre Franchi Releases Cancer Black Comedy in Quebec Theaters
The dark comedy and fantasy film L’autre, directed by Alexandre Franchi, opened in Quebec movie theaters on October 30, 2026, on 30 screens. The feature follows a publicist diagnosed with cancer who finds his hospital stay upended when a wounded criminal shares his room. The largely autobiographical work oscillates between black comedy, suspense, and fantastic fable, delivering a virulent critique of the healthcare system in Quebec. The screenplay was co-written by the director and Simon Lavoie. The cast features Pierre-Yves Cardinal as Stan, Bilel Chegrani as Darius, Karine Gonthier-Hyndman as Bénédicte, Nahéma Ricci as Fleur, Marc Messier as Richard, the father of Stan, and Benoit Gouin as Dr. Phaneuf, following screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma. The film runs 1 hour and 38 minutes and received a 13+ rating.
How Real Hospital Trauma Shaped the Script
The story draws directly from a life-threatening health crisis Franchi experienced in 2010. Diagnosed overnight with a rare bone cancer, the filmmaker lost his knee and part of his tibia while facing a 50% survival rate.
During his hospital stay, staff placed a young shooting victim in the adjacent bed. Police visits, armed threats in the hallways, and a mix-up in the hospital’s computer system that assigned him the wrong bed fueled the narrative. Franchi stated that the hospital errors and surreal encounters depicted in the film happened to him or his room neighbor.
Why Marc Messier’s Final Film Role Matters
The film marks the final role held by Marc Messier, who died on July 7, 2026. Messier portrays the protagonist’s father, a character modelled directly on the director’s own father.
Franchi noted that Messier spoke his father’s exact words on screen. “Marc and I had good conversations on fatherhood and I remember he feared his character might be too despicable or appear idiotic,” Franchi stated. “At the end of the edit, I desired only one thing: to show the film to Marc so he would realize I had been worthy of his trust.”
What Comes Next for the Cancer Trilogy
L’autre is the second volet in Franchi’s trilogy centered on cancer. The first, Happy Face, chronicled his mother’s battle with the disease. Production is already underway on the third opus, which carries the working title Petit drôle.
