Alice L. Becker, Longtime Social Worker and Community Volunteer, Dies at 98
Alice L. (Johns) Becker, a former resident of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and a dedicated social worker, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in York, Pennsylvania. She was 98 years traditional.
Early Life and Education
Born on November 21, 1927, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Alice was the daughter of Clark B. And Leona (Wolford) Johns. She attended Southmont High School. After raising her two sons, she pursued further education at The Pennsylvania Rehabilitation Center (now the Hiram G. Andrews Center) [Hiram G. Andrews Center].
Career as a Social Worker
Alice dedicated her career to helping others as a social worker at The City-County Clinic of Johnstown. She had a particular passion for working with youth, demonstrating her kind heart and compassion throughout her professional life.
Community Involvement
Alice was deeply involved in her community, contributing her time and talents to various organizations. She served as the children’s choir director at Calvary United Methodist Church in Johnstown for many years. She as well volunteered as a camp counselor at Jumonville Christian Camp in Uniontown and Camp Allegheny in Stoystown. Alongside her husband, William, she volunteered at Arbutus Park Manor, leading crafts and activities for residents.
Later Life and Companionship
Following the death of her husband, William Charles Becker, in 1994, Alice moved to Dover, Pennsylvania, in 1998 to be closer to family. She formed close friendships, including a group affectionately known as the “Well Kept Women,” who met for breakfast regularly. She became a member of the Dover Lioness and Zion United Methodist Church in York, where she sang in the choir. She shared a deep and committed bond with Lester Thomas of Dover since 2011.
Family
Alice is survived by her boyfriend, Lester Thomas of Dover; her sons, William Clark Becker (Vanessa) of Macungie, and George Scott Becker (Suzanne) of York; her grandchildren, Christopher Becker, Carrie Becker, and Benjamin Becker; and her great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Vivian Becker. She was predeceased by her husband, William Charles Becker, her parents, Clark B. Johns and Leona Johns (Wolford), and her sister, Annabelle Mishler.
