Financial services firm Allianz has withdrawn its financial sponsorship from Madrid’s Festival de las Ideas following pressure from participating artists and cultural figures who objected to the corporation’s economic ties to Israel, according to reports from Europa Press and RTÉ.
Artists Condition Appearances on Allianz Departure
The decision centers on mounting criticism over corporate investments linked to the conflict in Gaza. According to festival organisers cited by Europa Press, the sponsorship was severed jointly after prominent figures placed their participation on hold pending the event’s disassociation from Allianz. The festival runs from Thursday, September 17, to Sunday, September 20.
Backing Tied to UN Report on Israeli Bonds
The dispute erupted when filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen, presenter Inés Hernand, author Alana S. Portero, and singer Rodrigo Cuevas conditioned their appearances on the festival dropping Allianz as a backer. Other signatories to the artists’ statement include writers Marta Sanz and Paul B. Preciado, as well as musicians El Niño de Elche and Locus.
In their joint statement reported by Europa Press, the artists pointed to the 2025 report by United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, titled From the Economy of Occupation to the Economy of Genocide. The artists’ statement asserts that Allianz is the largest global purchaser of Israeli government bonds and accuses the firm of acting as a key financier of military actions against Palestinians.
"Culture is not a neutral space: it is a field traversed by power dynamics, economic interests, and political conflicts," the signatories wrote, arguing that a festival focused on human thought cannot simultaneously accept backing from economic actors tied to the occupation.
Organisers Absorb Deficit Ahead of Opening
Festival organisers confirmed to Europa Press that they accepted the loss of their main sponsor to ensure the public could still attend the reflective cultural space. Because the withdrawal occurred shortly before the opening, organisers stated it would be "difficult, if not impossible" to secure alternative funding within 48 hours, forcing the event to absorb the financial deficit directly.
Despite the abrupt loss of corporate backing, festival representatives emphasized that the event has maintained a pro-Palestinian stance in its programming since its inception.
Wider Boycotts Target European Cultural Sponsorships
Organisers of the Festival de las Ideas maintain that the event will proceed as scheduled while absorbing the financial consequences of the sponsorship cancellation.
