## AM4 Platform Seeing a Resurgence Due to DDR5 RAM Costs

The AM4 platform, despite the release of the newer AM5, is experiencing a surprising resurgence in popularity. This is primarily driven by the considerably higher cost of DDR5 RAM compared to the still-affordable DDR4. PC enthusiasts are opting to stick with or return to AM4 to avoid the expense of upgrading to the latest memory standard.

AM4 Motherboard Sales Higher, B550 Still Popular

Looks like the AM4 still has a long way to go

Initial expectations were that users would transition from AM4 to AM5 to take advantage of newer, faster technology. however, high DDR5 RAM prices are hindering this shift, making the AM4 platform a more practical choice for many.

Data from Wccftech shows that the B550 motherboard is currently a best-seller at major retailers like Amazon US and UK. This indicates a renewed interest in the previous generation platform due to DDR5 costs.

The B550 motherboards remain relatively affordable, typically priced between $100 and $120. German retailer MindFactory reported that sales of the B550 series have even surpassed those of the B650 and B850 series (AM5 compatible boards).

Gamers still care about AM4

Adding to this trend, there have been reports suggesting AMD may consider reviving AM4 production to address hardware demand and ongoing component shortages. Processors like the Ryzen 7 5800X3D remain highly regarded for gaming performance on the AM4 platform.

However, as of February 9, 2026, AMD has not announced plans to re-release older X3D series processors and remains focused on the 7000 and 9000 series, which are exclusive to the AM5 platform.
