America Waves: A Nationwide Celebration of Unity and Patriotism

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, a nationwide initiative called America Waves is gaining momentum. Spearheaded by America250, the official organization designated by Congress to lead the Semiquincentennial celebrations, America Waves aims to unite Americans through shared experiences centered around the American flag.

What is America Waves?

America Waves is designed as a signature program of America250, fostering a sense of national pride, reflection, and celebration across the country. The initiative centers on the American flag as a symbol of unity, inviting communities to participate in coordinated events and activations. The goal is to engage 350 million Americans by 2026, aligning with America250’s “350 for 250” mission.

Key Components of the Initiative

America Waves encompasses several key programs:

• Flag Distribution: Thousands of American flags have already been distributed at events like the 2026 Rose Parade and Floatfest, encouraging attendees to wave the flag and participate in the celebrations. Over 20,000 flags were handed out at the Rose Parade.
• Flag Sojourn 250: A collaborative project with the National Flag Foundation, this involves a special U.S. Flag traveling to every U.S. Cemetery overseas, every U.S. Territory, and every U.S. State. The journey will conclude in Washington, D.C., in July 2026. UPS, the American Battle Monuments Commission, and the National Sheriffs’ Association are also key partners in this effort.
• Light to Unite Campaign: On July 4, 2026, Americans are encouraged to illuminate their cities, towns, and landmarks in red, white, and blue, symbolizing national solidarity and shared heritage.

America250 and the Semiquincentennial

America250 was established by Congress to lead the nation’s celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The organization’s efforts extend beyond America Waves, encompassing a wide range of events and partnerships designed to engage all Americans in the commemoration. America250 Commission Chair Rosie Rios emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, stating that the commemoration should offer “something for everyone.”
