Angèle’s Electro Turn: New Single ‘What You Want’ Signals a Shift in Sound

Belgian pop star Angèle has released her new single, “What You Want,” a collaboration with French electronic music duo Justice, accompanied by a visually striking music video. The release, which arrived on February 27, 2026, marks a departure from the artist’s signature sugary pop sound and hints at a potential evolution in her musical direction.

A New Collaboration

The collaboration between Angèle and Justice began in December 2024, when Angèle attended a Justice concert in Brussels and met with Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé backstage. “What You Want” blends Angèle’s vocals with Justice’s signature electro sound, incorporating both French and English lyrics: “What you want / I’m only what you want / Oh baby / What you want / C’est pour la vie / Dare to take me / Oh oui.”

From Pop Star to Electro Muse

Since her debut in 2017 with “La Loi de Murphy,” Angèle has established herself as a prominent figure in the French-speaking music scene. She gained recognition for her colorful pop music, introspective lyrics, and visually engaging style. Her first album, Brol (2018), solidified her status as a rising pop star, earning her a Victoire de la Musique award for revelation album in 2019. Her second album, Nonante-Cinq (2021), continued her success, winning the Victoire de la Musique for most streamed album in 2023.

Angèle’s musical journey has included collaborations with artists like her brother Roméo Elvis, Damso, and Dua Lipa. However, the partnership with Justice represents a significant shift towards a more electronic sound. This evolution was foreshadowed in the summer of 2024 when she performed a cover of Kavinsky’s “Nightcall” with Phoenix, sporting a new short bob and a Coperni jumpsuit.

Navigating Fame and Identity

Angèle’s rise to fame has not been without its challenges. In 2021, a Netflix documentary showcased her reflections on life and fame, revealing her struggles with balancing the joys and loneliness of success. The artist similarly spoke about the discomfort of having her sexual orientation publicly revealed by Cyril Hanouna during a live television broadcast, expressing her desire to have controlled the narrative of her own coming out.

The ‘What You Want’ Music Video

The music video for “What You Want,” directed and choreographed by the collective (La)HORDE, is filmed on an iPhone and features Angèle in a red sequined dress. The video’s setting is a PMU (a French betting shop), and includes imagery of apples and embracing couples, symbolizing desire and forbidden love. The video accompanies the song’s themes of desire and love, set against a dark electro backdrop.

A Promising Return

The release of “What You Want” follows a four-year period of relative quiet for Angèle. The single is seen as a promising glimpse into her future musical projects, suggesting a willingness to experiment and push creative boundaries. Angèle celebrated the release with a listening party at the Rex Club in Paris on February 26, 2026, featuring DJs from the European electro scene, including Julien Granel, Andy 4000, Effy, Breakbot, and ur Trax.
