How Moving Out Helped Us Build a Stronger Marriage

The actor on how moving away from the family home strengthened her marriage.

Moving out of yoru childhood home is a rite of passage, but for actress Anya Taylor-Joy, it was a crucial step in solidifying her relationship with her husband, Malcolm McRae. the couple, who married in 2022, initially lived with Taylor-Joy’s parents while searching for their own place. While she cherishes her family, the arrangement ultimately proved challenging for a newly married couple.

“We were so grateful to be with my parents, but it was… a lot,” Taylor-Joy explained in a recent interview. “We were realizing we needed to build our own little world, our own routines, and our own space to realy grow as a couple.”

The experience highlighted the importance of establishing independence within a marriage. Living with family, even with the best intentions, can blur boundaries and hinder the development of a unique marital dynamic. “It’s wonderful to have that support system, but it’s also critically important to have the freedom to figure things out on your own, to make your own mistakes, and to learn from them together,” she said.

Finding their own home allowed Taylor-Joy and McRae to create a sanctuary where they could fully focus on each other and nurture their relationship. They were able to establish their own traditions, create a space that reflected their shared tastes, and navigate the everyday challenges of married life without external influences.

“It was like, suddenly, we had all this space to just be us,” Taylor-Joy shared. “We could cook together, have silly dance parties, and just really connect without feeling like we were disrupting anyone else’s life. It made a huge difference.”

The move wasn’t just about physical space; it was about emotional space as well. It allowed them to define their roles within the marriage, communicate more openly, and build a stronger foundation of trust and intimacy.

“I think every couple needs to find that balance between family support and self-reliant growth,” Taylor-Joy concluded.”For us, moving out was the best thing we could have done for our marriage.”
