Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton underwent physically demanding conditions while filming the upcoming survival action thriller, Apex, directed by Baltasar Kormákur. The film, slated for release on Netflix on April 24, 2026, sees Theron as a rock climber hunted by Egerton’s character in the Australian wilderness.
A Test of Endurance for Cast and Crew
Kormákur, known for his immersive filmmaking style in films like Everest, Adrift, and Beast, prioritized creating a visceral experience for the cast. He believes the environment itself is a crucial character in the story. “The environment, the geography where you make the film, it starts to inform the story and vice versa,” Kormákur explained. “Space and weather and landscape are a character in films. It’s particularly important to me to use it.”
Theron described the director’s approach as pushing the cast to their limits. “He knew what I was capable of. You aim for someone that can push you to a level that you can’t capture yourself,” she said. Egerton faced a particularly daunting challenge involving a wire-assisted fall. Despite his usual comfort with heights, he admitted to being “petrified” during the stunt. “I don’t usually struggle with heights, but I found hanging from a wire to be quite challenging,” Egerton stated. “There’s a free fall, and Balt asked if I would be open to doing it. I decided to deliver it a shot, and I don’t mind saying — I was petrified.”
Plot and Production Details
Apex centers on a rock climber (Charlize Theron) who finds herself the target of a relentless hunter (Taron Egerton) while navigating the harsh Australian landscape. Principal photography began in Sydney and New South Wales, Australia, in February 2025. Netflix secured the rights to the film in February 2024, with production by Ian Bryce, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, Charlize Theron, Beth Kono, AJ Dix, and Baltasar Kormákur.
