Apple Redesigns iPad Mini with OLED Display and A20 Pro Chip
Apple unveiled a redesigned iPad Mini featuring an 8.5-inch OLED display, an A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, and a thinner chassis measuring 5.4mm thick. The device maintains the physical footprint of its predecessor while expanding the screen size through bezels that are 24 percent thinner. Pre-orders open on October 28, 2026, with retail availability scheduled for November 6, 2026, starting at $699 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model.
Performance Specs and Hardware Upgrades
The A20 Pro processor delivers up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance, 2.7 times faster graphics, and 4.5 times faster AI performance compared to the previous model, according to Apple. Storage configurations include 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB tiers. The 128GB and 256GB versions utilize a five-core CPU with two super cores and three efficiency cores, whereas the 512GB configuration features a six-core CPU with two super cores and four efficiency cores. All storage variants include a 16-core Neural Engine.
Wireless connectivity receives an upgrade with Apple’s in-house N1 networking chip, enabling Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread protocol support. Cellular models incorporate Apple’s next-generation C2 modem system. The tablet also features IP67 water and dust resistance, a 12-megapixel front-facing camera repositioned to the long edge for landscape video calls, and a new “Acoustic Display” system that pairs specialized woofers and custom tweeters between the glass and aluminum enclosure.
When Apple holds events on Wednesdays, it increasingly does so following three days of announcements. OLED iPad mini today, M6 iMac and MacBook Pro on Tuesday and touch MacBook Pro on Wednesday would make sense.
Pricing Tiers and Display Options
Pricing for the base 128GB Wi-Fi model starts at $699 in the United States, representing a $200 price increase over the seventh-generation model released in 2024. Buyers can select a glare-reducing nano-texture glass option for an additional $100 on the 256GB and 512GB configurations. The most expensive model, featuring 512GB of storage, a nano-texture display, and cellular connectivity, costs $1,249.
The OLED panel achieves a peak HDR brightness of 1,200 nits and supports P3 wide color, alongside a 1-nit minimum brightness setting designed for low-light viewing. Despite the display technology shift, the screen maintains a 60Hz refresh rate, omitting Apple’s ProMotion technology. Reviewers and industry commentators noted that competing devices from other manufacturers offer faster refresh rates at lower price points, contrasting the $699 entry price with alternatives such as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A11 and Lenovo’s Legion Tab Gen 3.
