Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games Mitigated COVID-19 Transmission Through Strict Protocols

Strict surveillance and mitigation strategies successfully limited SARS-CoV-2 transmission among athletes and team officials during the rescheduled 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Japan, according to a study published in Eurosurveillance. Researchers at the Japan Institute for Health Security found that multiple infection prevention measures kept attack rates low among participants.

Japan enforced a mandatory 14-day quarantine for incoming country delegations and discouraged athletes from interacting with individuals outside competition venues. Participants underwent regular COVID-19 testing to identify infections early and isolate carriers promptly. Mandatory masking and physical distancing further reduced exposure risks across all event sites.

Inside the Tokyo Olympics' COVID safety protocols as the Games get underway

Infection Rates and Variant Distribution Among Participants

Out of 11,400 Olympic athletes and team officials, only 65 tested positive for COVID-19, resulting in an infection rate of 0.6%. The Paralympic Games recorded an identical 0.6% infection rate, with 30 positive tests out of 4,800 participants. The study authors noted that these low figures indicate the unique control measures effectively minimized virus spread.

Most infections occurred soon after arrival in Japan, with 85 of 95 positive cases identified upon entry or within the first two weeks. Genetic sequencing revealed that 68 of the infected individuals carried the Delta variant. Among those cases, 66 strains originated outside Japan, while two matched domestic strains.
