Apple Explores Clamshell Foldable iPhone Design Alongside Larger Foldable Models
Apple is reportedly investigating a second foldable iPhone design, this one adopting a clamshell form factor reminiscent of classic flip phones. this growth,reported by 9to5mac citing Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter,suggests Apple is considering a diverse range of foldable devices beyond its initially anticipated larger,book-style foldable.
The clamshell design involves a phone that folds vertically in half, creating a more compact profile when closed. While still in the exploratory phase and not guaranteed for release, this concept is gaining traction within Apple’s research and development teams. Gurman indicates Apple anticipates strong consumer interest in its first foldable iPhone – expected later this year and resembling the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or Google Pixel Fold – which could then drive demand for various foldable form factors.
This isn’t the first indication of Apple’s interest in a clamshell design; The Information previously reported on a similar prototype in 2024. Apple is together evaluating a larger, book-inspired foldable, and previously explored an 18-inch foldable iPad concept wiht an estimated $3,000 price tag.
