Apple is developing camera-equipped AirPods designed to act as visual sensors for Siri and Visual Intelligence, with an accelerated hardware variant potentially slated for release as early as September alongside next-generation iPhone hardware, according to reports from Bloomberg.

Parallel Development Tracks and Codenames

The consumer electronics giant has pursued camera-enabled audio wearables under multiple internal development tracks. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, a more advanced hardware iteration tracked under the internal codename B798 was initially scheduled for a 2027 release window.

However, a parallel, more mature variant designated as internal codename B790 appears significantly further along in the manufacturing pipeline. References to the B790 hardware have surfaced in recent software builds, including the second developer beta of iOS 27, placing that specific model on Apple’s internal roadmap for a potential debut this year.

Navigating Past Rumors and the September Window

Industry reports suggest that earlier cancellation rumors targeted the complex B798 project, leaving the B790 variant unaffected by those specific delays.

Apple frequently runs parallel hardware research and development pipelines to test component viability before committing products to mass production. If the current hardware roadmap holds, Apple could showcase the B790 AirPods during its traditional autumn product cycle in September. That timing would align with the company’s historical pattern of pairing major audio accessory updates with flagship mobile hardware launches.

Visual Intelligence and Real-Time Environmental Data

Unlike conventional consumer cameras, the sensors embedded in the rumored AirPods are not engineered to capture standard photographs or record video files. Instead, the hardware functions as a low-resolution visual sensor array intended to feed real-time environmental data directly into Apple’s Visual Intelligence tools and Siri.

According to supply chain details, the system allows Siri to process the physical environment surrounding the user to answer contextual queries. Users could theoretically examine physical objects—such as restaurant menus, local landmarks, or retail items—and ask Siri for immediate identification or background information without pulling an iPhone from a pocket or bag. Additional exploration includes smart navigation features that recognize physical landmarks to deliver more natural walking directions.

Hardware Design and Privacy Safeguards

To address growing privacy scrutiny surrounding wearable cameras, hardware designs reportedly feature slightly extended earbud stems to house the optical sensors alongside a physical LED indicator light. That indicator illuminates whenever the camera system actively processes or transmits visual data to the cloud.
