Apple Podcasts to Gain Enhanced Video Capabilities in iOS 26.4

Apple is set to upgrade its Podcasts app with advanced video podcast capabilities in the upcoming iOS 26.4 release, aiming to provide a more seamless experience for both creators and listeners.

Seamless Video and Audio Switching

The update will allow users to seamlessly switch between viewing a video podcast and listening to the audio-only version, catering to different preferences and situations. This move positions Apple to better compete with platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Netflix in the growing podcast landscape, where video podcasts with integrated audio options are gaining popularity.

HLS Technology for Optimized Playback

Apple’s implementation leverages its HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology, ensuring high-quality video playback without compromising the audio experience. HLS enables automatic quality adjustment based on network conditions and supports offline downloads of video podcasts.

Empowering Podcast Creators

For creators, the latest experience offers greater control and monetization opportunities. Participating hosting providers and ad networks will maintain control over their content. Acast, Amazon’s ART19, iHeartMedia’s Triton Digital, and SiriusXM are among the initial supporters of HLS video integration.

Dynamic Video Ad Insertion

iOS 26.4 will introduce support for dynamically inserted video ads, including host-read spots, opening up new revenue streams for creators. These ads will integrate seamlessly into existing shows without disrupting the user experience. Apple will charge ad networks a fee for the delivery of these dynamic ads. Apple does not charge hosting providers or creators to distribute podcasts on Apple Podcasts.

Availability

The upgraded video podcast experience will be available on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, and the web. The iOS 26.4 beta is currently available to developers, with a public release expected in the coming weeks.
