Apple Studios VFX Workers Secure Landmark IATSE Collective Bargaining Agreement
Apple Studios visual effects workers have secured their first collective bargaining agreement with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), establishing minimum pay rates, health care, retirement benefits, and artificial intelligence protections. The agreement establishes enforceable standards for wages, guaranteed minimum hours, and comprehensive overtime protections. The contract guarantees that workers receive compensation for all hours worked, alongside overtime rates covering holidays as well as sixth and seventh workdays.
Wages and Minimum Rates Align with Industry Standards
Under the terms of the new agreement, minimum pay rates are set for every covered job title. Annual minimum rate increases will match those negotiated in the IATSE-AMPTP Basic Agreement.
Beyond base pay, the contract institutes mandatory meal penalties when lunch breaks are violated, alongside additional hazard pay for dangerous conditions on set. Workers also receive daily and weekly turnaround and rest protections that bring visual effects crews in line with standards provided to editorial teams.
Employer-Paid Health and Retirement Benefits Take Effect
The contract delivers significant improvements to health and retirement security. Employees now receive employer-paid Motion Picture Industry health care, pension benefits, and a defined contribution retirement savings plan.
Employer contributions toward these health and retirement plans are retroactive, covering all hours worked since January 1. These provisions eliminate a long-standing disparity between on-set staff and the visual effects artists powering major streaming productions.
Apple Studios VFX Workers Secure AI Protections
The agreement directly addresses modern technology by incorporating artificial intelligence protections from the IATSE-AMPTP Basic Agreement.
IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb emphasized the significance of the milestone in a statement: “For too long, visual effects workers have powered some the industry’s biggest productions without the union protections afforded to many of their colleagues. It is long past time to fix that. By standing together, Apple Studios VFX workers have secured a strong first contract with enforceable standards, quality benefits, meaningful rest, and protections as new technology changes the industry.”
The Apple Studios agreement arrives on the heels of a broader organizing wave across the visual effects sector. Last year, VFX professionals working on Avatar, alongside crews employed by Marvel and Disney, ratified their own inaugural labor contracts, establishing industry-wide precedents for standard union protections, pension eligibility, and guaranteed rest periods.
