Apple Faces New Patent Lawsuit from Clairpath, LLC
Apple is currently defending against a patent infringement lawsuit filed in the Western District of Texas by Clairpath, LLC (case 7:26-cv-00015). The lawsuit, filed on January 14, 2026, centers around three patents acquired by Clairpath from Intellectual Discovery Co., Ltd. And Thinkware Systems Corporation (d/b/a THINKWARE).
Patent Claims and Targeted Devices
Clairpath alleges that various Apple devices infringe upon its patents. These devices include computers, displays, headsets, laptops, smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets. The patents relate to technologies involving image sensors, the “Check In on iPhone” feature, and wireless pairing capabilities. Specifically, the asserted patents are U.S. Patent No. 8,129,809 (“Image Sensor and Manufacturing Method Thereof”), U.S. Patent No. 8,996,708, and U.S. Patent No. 8,483,948.
Intellectual Discovery’s Litigation History
Intellectual Discovery Co., Ltd. Has been actively involved in multiple litigation campaigns in the United States. Prior cases include lawsuits filed by SiliconArts Technology US Inc. Against BOXX Technologies and NVIDIA (initiated in March 2025), TS-Optics Corporation against Microsoft (begun in September 2024), and KAIFI LLC against Amazon (July 2024) and Apple (January 2026). KAIFI’s August 2025 campaign also targeted Alphabet (Google).
Corporate Connections
Intellectual Discovery is a sovereign fund established by the government of Korea in 2010. Clairpath, created in Texas on June 9, 2025, lists WISEFIN as its manager, with Wisefin Co., Ltd. Identified as its parent company. SiliconArts Technology US Inc. Lists Yoonsang Jung as its director and identifies WiseFin Inc. As its direct parent, which is wholly owned by Intellectual Discovery. The relationship between the various “WISEFIN” entities remains somewhat unclear.
Patent Portfolio Transfers
In October 2025, RPX Corporation reported the transfer of 21 U.S. Patents from Intellectual Discovery to Clairpath, focusing on image sensors and navigation systems. Clairpath is asserting two of these patents (8,129,809 and 8,996,708) in the current case against Apple. In August 2025, 21 patents of similar subject matter were transferred from THINKWARE, a Korean provider of location-based services and Smart Car IT, to Clairpath, with one of those patents (8,483,948) now being asserted against Apple.
Legal Representation and Court Assignment
The case is being prosecuted by Ciccarelli Law Firm, with support from Steptoe LLP. It has been assigned to District Judge Alan D. Albright, who is also presiding over the KAIFI v. Apple case.
