Apple Delays Smart Home Devices, Awaiting Siri AI Upgrade

Apple has postponed the launch of its anticipated smart home display, along with updates to the Apple TV 4K and HomePod, due to ongoing development challenges with its revamped Siri AI assistant. The delays underscore Apple’s commitment to quality and its desire to deliver a fully functional and reliable AI experience before releasing new hardware dependent on these features.

Siri’s Revamp and the Impact on Hardware Launches

Originally slated for release with iOS 26.4 in March, the upgraded Siri experience is now being tested for inclusion in iOS 26.5 and iOS 27 releases Bloomberg News reported. This revamped Siri is intended to function as Apple’s first artificial intelligence chatbot according to Reuters, integrating more deeply with user data and on-screen content to perform more complex tasks.

Hardware Held Back by Software

The delay impacts several key products. A new Apple TV 4K, which hasn’t been updated since 2022, and a new HomePod were expected to launch alongside the smart home display. However, Apple has linked these releases to the functionality of the new Siri features. The smart home display, designed to compete with devices like Amazon’s Echo Display, has been in development for some time, featuring an approximately 7-inch square display with potential wall-mounting or speaker base options, a camera for recognition and presence detection, and a tvOS 27-based interface.

Internal Shifts and Technical Challenges

The delays haven’t been without internal consequences. John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of AI, has reportedly been reassigned from Siri and other consumer-facing projects following disagreements over missed deadlines. Leadership of the project has shifted to Craig Federighi and Vision Pro lead Mike Rockwell, who are overseeing a complete rebuild of the core Siri technology, dubbed “Siri LLM.” 9to5Mac details how the initial target for the Siri upgrade was Fall 2024, then moved to early 2025, May, and now Spring 2026.

Looking Ahead

Apple is prioritizing a robust and reliable Siri experience, even if it means delaying the launch of new hardware. The current expectation is a September 2026 debut for the Apple TV 4K, HomePod, and smart home display, coinciding with the anticipated release of iOS 27. While an intermediate update (iOS 26.5) could potentially deliver some improvements sooner, the full suite of new features is expected to arrive in the fall. Apple’s cautious approach reflects the critical role AI will play in the success of these devices.
