Cairo to Host Landmark Arab Theater Festival and Puppetry Forum in January 2026

Cairo, Egypt – January 2026 will see Cairo at the heart of the Arab world’s performing arts scene, hosting both the 16th Arab theater Festival (January 10-16) and the 5th Arab Forum for the Arts of Puppetry (January 21-23). These events promise a vibrant showcase of contemporary Arab creativity and a platform for critical dialog within the region’s theatrical community.

A Celebration of Arab Theater

The Arab Theater Festival, organized by the Arab Theater Authority in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, is a major annual event for the contemporary Arab scene. This year’s edition anticipates the participation of over 700 artists,creators,researchers,and professionals from across the arab world . Sixteen shows, selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants, will comprise the official program.

Fifteen of these productions will compete for the prestigious Sheikh sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Prize for best theatrical performance, a significant honor within the Arab theatrical landscape. The festival extends beyond performances, fostering intellectual exchange through conferences focused on Arab theater criticism and offering workshops to nurture emerging talent.

The 2026 festival will also pay tribute to seventeen prominent figures in Egyptian theater history, recognizing their contributions to the art form. Tunisian theater Takes Center Stage

Tunisia will have a strong presence at the festival, with three productions from the Tunisian National Theater selected for inclusion: “Comme jour” written and directed by Leila Toubel, “Jacaranda” written by Abdelhalim Massoudi and directed by nizar Saidi, and “Les Fugueuses” written and directed by Wafa Taboubi.

Arab Puppetry Forum: A Crossroads of Heritage and Innovation

Following the theater festival, Cairo will host the 5th Arab Forum for the Arts of Puppetry from January 21-23. This event will showcase ten puppetry performances, alongside professional sessions exploring the intricacies of the craft and a tribute to three influential figures in Arab puppetry. The forum highlights the art of puppetry as a dynamic blend of tradition and contemporary experimentation.
