Global Camera Shipments Show Steady Growth
The market recovery is driven primarily by specific segments rather than a uniform return of all traditional camera types. According to CIPA’s February 2026 outlook, built-in lens cameras experienced the most striking growth, jumping 29.6% from 1,880,414 units in 2024 to 2,436,911 units in 2025. Interchangeable-lens cameras also grew from 6,609,813 units to 7,001,965 units over the same period.
Mirrorless bodies remain the primary engine of the interchangeable-lens category, climbing from 5,612,205 units in 2024 to 6,311,054 units in 2025. Meanwhile, traditional DSLR shipments continue to decline. Used-market platforms reflect similar trends, with MPB’s 2026 analysis highlighting premium fixed-lens cameras as the fastest-growing segment in the new camera market throughout 2025.
Where Dedicated Cameras Still Outperform Smartphones
Despite significant advancements in computational photography, physical constraints limit what smartphone sensors can achieve. According to industry testing and technical comparisons, typical smartphone sensors measure around 1/2.55 inches (5.6mm by 4.2mm). In contrast, even entry-level interchangeable-lens cameras use APS-C sensors measuring 23.5mm by 15.6mm—roughly 20 times larger.
