Argentina Sweeps Men’s Tennis Podium at South American Games 2026

At the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentine tennis player Lautaro Midón claimed the men’s singles gold medal by defeating compatriot Juan Manuel La Serna 6-3, 6-2 in the final. The victory anchored a historic sweep of the men’s singles podium by the host nation, with Luciano Ambrogi securing the bronze medal.

Men’s Singles Sweep and Doubles Competition

Lautaro Midón entered the tournament as the top seed in the men’s singles draw. In the final on Saturday, he overcame his doubles partner and friend Juan Manuel La Serna in straight sets. Earlier in the bracket, Midón defeated compatriot Luciano Ambrogi in the semifinals. Ambrogi recovered in the third-place match to take the bronze medal by defeating Venezuela’s John Echeverría 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, ensuring an all-Argentine podium in the discipline.

Midón and La Serna also teamed up in the men’s doubles tournament, where they earned the silver medal. The pair narrowly lost the doubles gold in a super tie-break against the Colombian duo of Sebastián Gómez and Cristian Rodríguez, falling 2-6, 7-6 (13-11), 10-7.

Women’s and Mixed Doubles Success

Argentina secured a second tennis gold medal through the women’s doubles pairing of Luisina Giovannini and Jazmín Ortenzi. The Argentine duo claimed the title without dropping a single set throughout the tournament.

In total, the Argentine tennis delegation collected eight medals across the events. Alongside the singles and doubles titles, Jazmín Ortenzi captured silver and Luciana Moyano took bronze in the women’s singles tournament. Luciano Ambrogi and Luciana Moyano also earned a silver medal in the mixed doubles competition after losing in the final match.

Delegation Standing and Historical Context

Former world number three Guillermo Coria visited the sports complex to watch the matches, noting the athletes’ performance under the pressure of competing at home. In the overall medal standings for the 2026 South American Games, the Argentine delegation ranks second behind Brazil, accumulating 80 gold, 86 silver, and 125 bronze medals for a total of 291 podium finishes.

Argentina previously hosted the regional multi-sport event twice. The country hosted the second edition in Rosario in 1982—then known as the Cruz del Sur Games, established in Bolivia in 1978—and again in Buenos Aires in 2006. Argentina led the medal table in both of those editions, collecting 286 medals in 1982 and 292 medals in 2006. Since Colombia topped the table at the 2010 Games in Medellín, Argentina placed fourth in Medellín 2010, Santiago 2014, and Cochabamba 2018, before finishing third at the Asunción 2022 Games.
