The Toronto Argonauts identified defensive end Jonathan Kongbo as a key target during the recent CFL free agency period, with the team making him their first phone call when negotiations opened. According to Argonauts.ca, director of player personnel Jim Barker listed Kongbo as one of just five primary targets for the team. Kongbo expressed surprise at being so highly valued, stating, “It surprises me a little bit…That’s just since I feel like in my pro career I’ve never really gotten a fair shot.” He added that his strong performance last season fueled his confidence and eagerness to prove himself in Toronto.

Head coach Mike Miller initiated contact with Kongbo, followed by a call from general manager Michael Clemons, both emphasizing the Argonauts’ strong interest. Kongbo described the decision to join the Argonauts as “a really, really easy choice,” citing the opportunity to fully realize his potential.

Reunion with Coach Maxie

A significant factor in Kongbo’s decision was the opportunity to reunite with defensive line coach Demetrious Maxie. Both previously worked together with the Edmonton Elks. Kongbo’s Career Trajectory

Kongbo, a 6’4”, 260-pound defensive end, was initially drafted fifth overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2019 CFL Draft. He has since moved between several teams, including a stint with the Denver Broncos. He hopes to establish a long-term home with the Argonauts.

Potential Role and Team Confidence

The Argonauts plan to utilize Kongbo in a Canadian position, rotating him with 2025 first-round pick Jeremiah Ojo, with Kongbo expected to be the starter.
