Arsenal forward Ceadach O’Neill has been named in Northern Ireland’s senior squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, dealing a significant blow to the Football Association of Ireland’s hopes of securing the teenager’s international allegiance, according to reports from The Irish Times.
The 18-year-old Derry-born player, who comes from a strong Gaelic Athletic Association background with family ties to the Derry football team, is included in manager Michael O’Neill’s 28-player panel for League B Group 2 matches. Having already made two substitute appearances in summer friendlies against Guinea and France, O’Neill stands on the verge of a competitive cap that would significantly restrict any potential switch to the Republic of Ireland under FIFA regulations.
International Eligibility Rules and Squad Context
Under international football regulations, should O’Neill feature in any of Northern Ireland’s four upcoming Nations League matches against Georgia, Ukraine, or Hungary, he will be barred from completing an association transfer for three years. A second competitive appearance would permanently tie the Arsenal academy prospect to Northern Ireland.
The squad announcement follows recent discussions between Northern Ireland head coach Michael O’Neill and the player in London. O’Neill’s inclusion comes despite reported interest from the FAI, whose director of football, John Martin, declined to comment specifically on the player during a media briefing.
