Martin Scorsese’s AI Partnership Sparks Backlash from Art Directors Guild

The Art Directors Guild (ADG) has condemned Martin Scorsese for his role as an advisor with AI startup Black Forest Labs, accusing the filmmaker of undermining union artists after he promoted the company’s FLUX storyboarding tool. The ADG, which represents storyboard artists, set designers, and concept artists, criticized the tool for allegedly using “large swaths of copyrighted work” without consent, according to a statement released June 9, 2023.

Why the Art Directors Guild Condemned Scorsese’s AI Partnership

The ADG’s statement criticized Scorsese for “turning his back on the human artists” who collaborate on his films, arguing that AI tools like FLUX risk replacing union professionals. The union highlighted a 2024 study by the Animation Guild and The Concept Art Association, which found “role consolidation and reduction” in Hollywood due to AI adoption. “To think their professional contributions can be mimicked or outshone by generative AI, which is built on work likely stolen from them, is a betrayal of the collaborative nature of cinema,” the ADG said.

What Scorsese Said About AI in Filmmaking

Scorsese defended his partnership with Black Forest Labs, stating that AI tools like FLUX offer “cinematic intelligence” to streamline preproduction. “Cinema is a young medium, only around 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it can evolve,” he said. The filmmaker claimed testing FLUX on a scene allowed “immediately sharing the storyboard” without sacrificing quality. However, the ADG argued that such tools “circumvent the input of union professionals,” citing concerns over unpaid data scraping and lack of transparency.

How AI Is Reshaping Hollywood’s Workforce

The ADG’s concerns reflect broader anxieties in the entertainment industry. A 2023 report by the Motion Picture Association found that 68% of studios are experimenting with generative AI for concept art and set design, with some firms reducing human roles by 20%. While Scorsese has long done his own storyboarding, his endorsement of FLUX has intensified debates over AI’s impact on creative jobs. “This isn’t just about technology—it’s about who controls the future of filmmaking,” said a union representative.

What’s Next for AI in Hollywood?

The ADG has called for stricter regulations on AI tools, including transparency in data sourcing and compensation for artists. Meanwhile, Black Forest Labs has not publicly responded to the criticism. As AI adoption accelerates, the conflict underscores a pivotal moment for the industry: balancing innovation with the protection of human labor. “The question isn’t whether AI will change cinema,” said a film historian. “It’s whether it will do so at the cost of the artists who built the industry.”
