Ireland-Canada Trade Growth Surpasses 15% in 2023, Driven by Agri-Food and Tech Sectors
Ireland’s trade with Canada increased by 15.2% in 2023, according to data from the Canadian Department of International Trade, marking the highest annual growth rate in bilateral commerce since 2018. The surge, attributed to expanded agri-food exports and tech sector collaborations, highlights a strategic alignment between the two nations amid shifting global supply chains.
Agri-Food Exports Surge as Canada Seeks Diversified Supply Chains

Agricultural and food products accounted for 37% of Ireland’s exports to Canada in 2023, up from 29% in 2022, according to the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs. Key exports included dairy, meat, and seafood, with companies like Kerry Group and Dairygold reporting expanded contracts with Canadian retailers. This growth follows Canada’s 2022 announcement to diversify imports away from traditional Asian suppliers, as outlined in a federal trade strategy document.
Technology and Innovation Partnerships Fuel Economic Ties
Cross-border tech collaborations have also intensified, with Dublin-based startups securing over €200 million in Canadian investment in 2023. The Irish Tech Association cited a 40% rise in joint ventures between Irish and Canadian tech firms, particularly in fintech and AI. “Canada’s regulatory environment and access to North American markets make it a strategic partner,” said Fiona O’Leary, CEO of the Irish Tech Association, in a February 2024 interview.
Challenges Remain Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty
Despite the growth, trade experts warn of lingering challenges. The European Commission’s 2023 report on transatlantic trade noted that Ireland’s reliance on Canadian markets for 8% of its total exports could expose it to volatility in energy and transportation costs. Additionally, the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) has faced delays in implementing new digital trade provisions, according to a March 2024 analysis by the Centre for International Governance Innovation.
What’s Next for Ireland-Canada Economic Relations?
The Irish government plans to host a trade summit in Dublin this June to strengthen ties, following a similar event in 2022 that resulted in €500 million in new investment commitments. Meanwhile, Canadian officials have signaled interest in expanding agricultural imports through the upcoming Canada-Ireland Trade and Investment Commission, as stated in a March 2024 press release.
