A 33-year-old Juneau man died Wednesday afternoon when his vehicle went airborne over the Hyer Road underpass and slammed into a concrete bridge support, according to the Juneau Police Department.
Juneau Police Investigate Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash on Hyer Road
The fatal crash occurred on January 22, 2025, along the Egan Drive corridor near the Hyer Road underpass. Emergency responders arrived at the scene following reports of a severe single-vehicle collision. Investigators determined that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed before the vehicle left the roadway, launching off the embankment and striking the concrete support structure.
Medical personnel pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Police have withheld the name of the 33-year-old man pending notification of next of kin, as confirmed by the Juneau Police Department.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
Traffic in the area experienced significant delays as reconstruction teams and patrol officers investigated the mechanics of the crash. The section of the roadway near the underpass remained closed for several hours while crews cleared wreckage and documented skid marks and trajectory angles.
