Aston Villa Set for ‘Special’ Europa League Semi-Final Clash with Nottingham Forest

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery expressed excitement ahead of the club’s Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest, describing the upcoming match as “special” for both teams following a commanding 7-1 aggregate victory over Bologna in the quarter-finals.

The all-Premier League showdown emerged after Villa secured their place with a 4-0 second-leg win at Villa Park, building on a 3-1 advantage from the first leg in Italy. Ollie Watkins marked the occasion by scoring his 100th goal for the club in the 16th minute, capping a flowing team move that highlighted Villa’s attacking prowess.

Despite an early setback when Morgan Rogers’ penalty was saved by Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia, Villa responded swiftly. Emiliano Buendia restored the lead just 44 seconds later, before Rogers made amends for his miss by scoring with his weaker left foot to end an 11-match goal drought. Ezri Konsa sealed the victory with a second-half volley from a corner in the 89th minute.

Emery praised his team’s execution, noting they extended the same disciplined game plan used in Bologna. “Today we extended the same game plan as we did last week in Bologna, respecting them and the competition,” he said. “Of course the performance collectively and playing two matches is really fantastic, but difficult.”

The victory sets up a historic all-English semi-final, with both clubs having won the European Cup in their histories. Emery highlighted the significance of the occasion, stating: “It’s important for both teams and we have something similar, both clubs have won the European Cup. They have had their moments in Europe at the highest level in their history and our history.”

Nottingham Forest booked their semi-final spot with a 1-0 second-leg win over Porto, securing a 2-1 aggregate success. Morgan Gibbs-White scored the decisive goal in a tense encounter at the City Ground.

With the semi-final draw confirming the Villa-Forest tie, both teams now prepare for what Emery described as “a very good semifinal for both teams, supporters.” The winner will advance to the Istanbul showpiece, continuing their pursuit of European glory.
