Auburn shuts out Tennessee 1-0 in SEC soccer match

Auburn used a stout defensive performance to defeat Tennessee 1-0 on Thursday night, handing the Lady Vols their second shutout loss in three games. The victory lifts Auburn to a 6-2-2 overall record and a 1-2-2 mark in Southeastern Conference play at the midpoint of the conference slate. Meanwhile, Tennessee falls deeper into scoring struggles that mirror the team’s offensive drop-off from a season ago.

Dylan Driver Breaks Open a Slow First Half

The opening 20 minutes featured minimal attacking threat from either side before Auburn broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. Auburn striker Dylan Driver gathered the ball with only Cayden Norris to beat, slotting the shot home for the game’s only goal.

Tennessee managed just one shot in the first half and failed to put any attempt on target. It marks the third match where the Lady Vols have failed to record a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, a stark contrast to their early-season form when they scored within the first 15 minutes of their first eight matches.

Defensive Stalemate Decides the Second Half

Auburn pressed immediately after halftime, rattling the crossbar within the first two minutes of the period. The Tigers maintained sustained offensive pressure before shifting into a defensive posture over the final 20 minutes to protect their lead.

Tennessee generated its first corner kick with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Kylee Simmons nearly capitalized on the opportunity, heading the ball just over the crossbar. Simmons threatened again with six and a half minutes left on the clock, sending a volley high over the frame.

Conference Scoring Struggles Mount for the Lady Vols

The Lady Vols have struggled to find consistency in the attacking third during league play. Tennessee has scored just six goals across five SEC matches, with five of those tallies coming during the first two conference fixtures.

The team now gets a scheduled break before traveling to face South Carolina on Friday, Oct. 9.
