Boundary Road Burst Pipe Floods Auckland Street and Disrupts Water Supply
A burst pipe sent water flooding across Boundary Road in the Auckland suburb of New Windsor overnight, damaging the road, disrupting the local water supply, and forcing nearby businesses to close. Police officers responding to initial reports of road flooding and a possible car crash arrived at the scene at approximately 10:15 p.m. yesterday, 1News reported.
Kunal Chand, owner of the nearby Dundale’s Fusion Fijian Cafe, said staff were finishing up for the night when an unusual sound drew them outside. “We came outside and saw a very big flood happening outside,” Chand said. He watched the street surface begin bubbling upwards before finally rupturing and sending water rushing across the pavement. Employees quickly alerted emergency services and tried to wave motorists away from the hazards on the damaged roadway.
Watercare Crews Complete Emergency Repairs
Watercare water networks operations manager Rex Chou said repair crews located the broken main outside 50 Boundary Rd at around 11:00 p.m. Workers excavated the site and successfully isolated the damaged pipe section by 2:10 a.m., halting the flow and allowing engineers to begin restoring service. Water supply is now fully restored to all affected properties, though emergency road repairs remain ongoing.

A stop/go traffic management system is operating around the damaged stretch of Boundary Road to maintain vehicle access while crews finish repairing the torn asphalt. “Our priority was restoring the water supply, and the cause of the burst is still being investigated,” Chou said. “We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience while we do these emergency repairs.”
Business Owners Face Weekend Revenue Losses
The sudden utility failure hit local commerce hard by wiping out water access ahead of Saturday morning operations. Dundale’s Fusion Fijian Cafe could not open for breakfast or lunch service due to the outage, dealing a severe blow to weekly revenue. Weekend trading is critical for the eatery, with Saturday and Sunday earnings typically covering staff wages.
“It’s extremely frustrating,” Chand said of the shutdown. “If you don’t have water, there’s no sense of getting around.”
