Green Street Fire Investigation Leads to Homicide Charges in Harrisburg
Jonathan Gatto, 41, faces homicide charges after his wife, 41-year-old pediatrician Julia Pederson, was found dead inside their Green Street home following a fire on Saturday, local21news.com reported. Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo stated that the fire was intentionally set and that coroner testing determined Pederson died before the flames broke out.
Authorities arrested Gatto on Wednesday after identifying him as the primary suspect in the death. According to charging documents, Gatto told investigators he could not save his wife from the blaze after managing to get the couple’s 7-year-old daughter safely out of the house. Because Gatto and the child were the only other occupants present during the incident, police placed him under arrest.
Neighbor Reactions and Neighborhood Impact on Green Street
Residents in the typically quiet Harrisburg neighborhood expressed shock following the arrest, with one close neighbor stating he is now considering moving away. The neighbor, who spoke anonymously to local21news.com, described Gatto as a calm and family-oriented person who frequently spent time with his daughter and neighborhood children. He was very chill,
said the neighbor, adding, He was a very kind person, very, let’s say, a family person.
The father also mentioned he had heard about the deadly fire previously but had not known that Gatto, whom he considered a close friend, had been arrested and charged in connection with Pederson’s death.

The situation has raised difficult questions for local families, including the neighbor’s 5-year-old son, who regularly played with the couple’s daughter, Flora. The neighbor noted that his son repeatedly asks when Flora will return to play, stating he used to trust the family enough to leave his children to play there all day across the house, back, yard, and everywhere because Gatto was always with his daughter. Law enforcement officers returned to the Green Street property on Friday carrying cameras, boxes, bags, and a sledgehammer, though officials declined to answer public inquiries regarding the ongoing investigation.
District Attorney Characterizes the Case
Investigators and prosecutors have not released additional details regarding a specific suspected motive, citing the ongoing nature of the criminal case against Gatto.
