Austin Classical Guitar Youth Orchestra: Nurturing Young Guitarists

The Austin Classical Guitar Youth Orchestra (ACGYO) provides a transformative musical experience for young classical guitarists in the Austin, Texas area. Founded in 2013, the ensemble offers intermediate to advanced players the opportunity to develop their skills, perform in prestigious venues, and collaborate with fellow musicians.

ACGYO is open by audition to classical guitarists under the age of 19. The orchestra is designed to be a fun and challenging environment where members can grow both musically and personally. Since its inception, ACGYO has performed for thousands of people and premiered several new works and arrangements [1].

Audition Requirements

Prospective members are expected to demonstrate strong technical skills, reading proficiency, and ensemble experience. Specific audition requirements include:

• Sight-reading ability up to the 5th position.
• Performance of standard repertoire at or above the level of intermediate pieces by composers such as Carcassi, Sor, and Villa Lobos. [2]
• Well-maintained fingernails to ensure consistent and powerful tone.
• A two-octave A major scale with i and m alternation. [2]
• Performance of 1-2 pieces. [2]

• A short sight-reading excerpt in first position. [2]

Rehearsals and Performances

ACGYO rehearses weekly from September to April, typically on Sundays from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled in preparation for special events. [1]

The orchestra typically performs 3-6 concerts locally each year, including 1-2 out-of-town performances. Members are required to wear concert black attire – black slacks or a skirt below the knee, black dress shoes, black socks, and a black button-down shirt or blouse (estimated cost $100). [1]

Travel and Financial Considerations

ACGYO undertakes at least one out-of-town trip annually. Members are responsible for all travel expenses, including airfare, hotels, and meals. The estimated annual cost of travel is $3,000. [1]

Recent Activities

In March 2020, ACGYO participated in the “Together Tour,” a collaborative concert project with ensembles from Albuquerque and El Paso, designed to foster collaboration and remove barriers between young musicians from Texas and New Mexico. [3]

Tuition

A tuition fee of $150 is required each semester. This covers rehearsals, music, and complimentary admission for up to three guests at ensemble events. Partial payment plans and scholarships are available. [2]
