Auston Matthews’ Season Ends After Collision with Radko Gudas; Ducks Defenseman Suspended

Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 NHL season after suffering a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion during a game against the Anaheim Ducks last Thursday. The injury occurred during a knee-on-knee collision with Ducks captain Radko Gudas.

Gudas Receives Five-Game Suspension

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has suspended Radko Gudas for five games for the hit on Matthews. This marks the fourth suspension of Gudas’s career, bringing his total suspensions to 26 games and approximately $850,000 in forfeited pay .

The Department of Player Safety stated that while Gudas attempted a full-body check, the knee-on-knee contact could not be excused .

Matthews’ Disappointing Season and Maple Leafs Playoff Hopes

The injury brings an complete to a season that saw Matthews’ offensive production dip to 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games – his lowest totals in 10 NHL seasons. The Maple Leafs are now set to miss the playoffs for the first time during Matthews’ career .

Agent Criticizes NHL’s Ruling

Judd Moldaver, Matthews’ agent, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the NHL’s decision, calling the five-game suspension “laughable and preposterous.” Moldaver argued that Gudas should have been given an in-person hearing and a more substantial suspension, citing the severity of the injury .

Gudas’ Impact on the Ducks

Gudas joined the Ducks in 2023 and had been a key contributor, helping the team contend for a postseason spot. The Ducks currently hold first place in the Pacific Division. They will be without their captain for their game against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday .
