Rose Davies claimed Australia’s first athletics medal of the Commonwealth Games, kicking away from Kenya’s Diana Wanza in the women’s 10,000m to secure gold on the opening day of track and field events at Glasgow. Davies surged to the lead during the final kilometre of the 25-lap race, crossing the finish line 10 seconds ahead of the African champion.
Historic 10,000m Victory for Davies
According to race reports, the victory marks the first time an Australian woman has won the 10,000m event at the Commonwealth Games. Davies admitted she only felt secure about the outcome during the final metres of the race. “I was running scared, anything could happen, and I had no idea where the girls were on the big screen,” Davies said, as reported by athletics coverage. “But I was just going as hard as I could in the last 100 metres, but once I crossed the line I was very happy.” Wanza, who won the African title in Ghana in May, initiated a breakaway move with six laps remaining. Davies reeled in the Kenyan runner before launching a decisive push in the final two laps. “I have just had so much consistency and every race I have grown,” Davies stated regarding her performance. The 26-year-old athlete holds Australian national records in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events, and is scheduled to compete in the shorter distance.
Track and Field Heats Open at Scotstoun
The track and field program opened with preliminary heats across sprinting events. In the women’s 100m, Torrie Lewis posted a time of 11.15 seconds to advance to the semi-finals, accompanied by fellow Australians Ebony Lane and Georgia Harris. In the men’s 100m heats, Eddie Nketia qualified with a wind-assisted time of 10.07 seconds. He was joined by seeded runners Lachie Kennedy and Rohan Browning, who advanced with a time of 10.24 seconds. Browning criticized the qualification format, which required runners from different heats to compete against one another based strictly on times rather than traditional race placings amidst gusty weather. “It’s an unheard of progression, it’s extremely weird,” Browning said of the format.
Gymnastics Success on the Apparatus
In artistic gymnastics events at Glasgow International Stadium, Kate McDonald won the gold medal on the uneven bars with a score of 14.333 points, according to competition results. McDonald finished ahead of Canadian gymnast Ellie Black, who scored 13.900, and Wales’ Emily Roper, who claimed the bronze. The victory marked a turnaround for McDonald following a seventh-place finish on the apparatus at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. In the men’s competition, James Hardy won a bronze medal in the floor exercise routine with a score of 13.433 points, ending a 16-year medal drought for Australia on the apparatus. Hardy competed with a pink ribbon painted on his right-hand fingernail in tribute to his mother, Sally, who recently recovered from breast cancer.
