Australian Wool Market Drops Sharply Amid Weak Buyer Confidence and Producer Resistance

The Australian wool market closed the 18th week of the 2026/27 season with its largest weekly adjustment, driven by lower buyer confidence and firm resistance from producers, Diario El Telégrafo reported. The Eastern Market Indicator fell to 17.23 Australian dollars per kilogram clean base, marking a 3.5% drop from the previous week.

Global Currency Shifts and Indicator Declines

In United States currency, the indicator finished at $12.12, representing a 3.2% decline. The drop in international currency was moderated by the exchange rate, with the Australian dollar moving to U$S 0,7037 compared to U$S 0,7016 the prior week. The Eastern Market Indicator fell during 12 of the last 14 trading days, shedding 170 Australian cents over that stretch. Even with the losses, the indicator remains 21.9% higher than during the same auction last year.

Volume and Producer Rejection Rates at Auctions

Auction offering reached 27.934 fardos, an increase of 2,042 bales or 7.9% from the previous week, which included 1,416 bales of New Zealand wool offered in Melbourne. The rejection rate climbed to 27.0%, marking the highest level recorded since May 2023. Approximately one-third of Merino fleece offerings failed to sell, compared to 27% for the total market. According to Australian Wool Innovation, this trend indicates that many growers refuse to accept the current price correction and prefer to retain their wool.

Regional Pricing Pressures and Fine Wool Demand

Fine Merino wool featuring good style and measurements continued to outperform lower-style options that carried high vegetable matter or low tensile strength. Processor competition increased on Wednesday, keeping selected 17.5- to 18-micron lots firm to dearer. Coarser Merino lines recorded steeper drops. In the southern region, the price gap between 18- and 21-micron wool widened to 632 cents, compared to 193 cents at the beginning of the calendar year. Crossbred wool prices also recorded sharp declines, following the downward trend of Merino fleece.
